  1. 1868-1912. Known as Scott of the Antarctic.
  2. English explorer, who commanded two Antarctic
  3. expeditions, 1901-04 and 1910-12. On 18 Jan
  4. 1912 he reached the South Pole, shortly after
  5. Amundsen, but on the return journey he and
  6. his companions died in a blizzard only a few
  7. miles from their base camp. His journal was
  8. recovered and published in 1913. Born at
  9. Devonport, he entered the navy in 1882. With
  10. Scott on the final expedition were Wilson,
  11. Oates, Bowers, and Evans.
